Roman
Payne (born
January 31, 1977
in Seattle,
USA)
is an English-language
novelist living in
Paris, France.
His novels are
known for their timeless,
poetic mood, blending
archaic 18th and
19th century European
settings with modern,
suggestive themes.
Influenced
by the
European picaresque
genre and the Bildungsroman,
his plots usually
focus
on the voyages of
individuals who
set-off from their
homes on solitary
quests
to obtain heroic
status, or what
he calls “the
poetic life.” Payne
was awarded placement
in Literature Monthly’s “Top
Ten Most Interesting
Novelists Out-of-the-Mainstream.”[1] He
is considered one
of France’s
most celebrated residents[2].
Four of Payne’s
novels have been
released: Crepuscule,
Cities and Countries,
Hope
and Despair, and
Rooftop
Soliloquy; and his
fifth novel, The
Wanderess,
is set for publication
in
early 2011. For more
